IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test. It is required for people who want to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA.

Types of IELTS Tests

  • 1. Listening
    • Time: 30 minutes
    • Format: 4 recordings (monologues and conversations)
    • Tasks: 40 questions (multiple choice, matching, map labeling, etc.)
    • Skills Tested: Understanding main ideas, details, opinions, and attitudes.
  • 2. Reading
    • Time: 60 minutes
    • Academic: 3 long texts from books, journals, newspapers.
    • General: Extracts from books, ads, company handbooks, notices.
    • Tasks: 40 questions (true/false, matching headings, etc.)
  • 3. Writing
    • Time: 60 minutes
    • Academic Task 1: Describe a graph, chart, map, or process.
    • General Task 1: Write a letter (formal/informal).
    • Task 2 (both): Write an essay on a given topic (opinion, problem-solution, etc.)
  • 4. Speaking
    • Time: 11–14 minutes (face-to-face)
    • Part 1: Introduction and personal questions
    • Part 2: Cue card – speak on a topic for 1–2 minutes
    • Part 3: Discussion on broader issues related to the cue card topic
